India Mark II Deepwell Hand PumpINDIA MARK II
Deep well Hand Pump

The India Mark II hand pump is a result of continuous and collaborative research and development efforts of non-governmental, industrial and multilateral aid organisations, in co-ordination with the Government of India during the 1970s. This hand pump is accepted internationally as one of the most reliable and sturdy pumps originating from a developing country.

The Hand pump Testing Development Report of the World Bank (Technical Paper Number 29) reached the following conclusions on the IM II hand pump:
"Reliable, robust and performs well, though good quality control in manufacturing is essential. It requires a reasonable level of skill to be maintained and is suitable for manufacture in some developing countries..."
The Rural Water Supply Programme of the Government of India has used an estimated 3 million India Mark II hand pumps by the year 1999.

FEATURES
The hand pump consists of the Above-ground mechanism comprising of Pump Head, Handle, Water Tank and Stand assemblies and the Below-ground mechanism comprising of Riser Pipes, Connecting Rods and Cylinder assembly.
The above-ground mechanism is fabricated from welded steel plate and sections for strength and hot-dip galvanised for corrosion resistance.
A chain and quadrant mechanism of the pump handle provides easy and accurate alignment of the connecting rod.
The handle bar has a high mechanical advantage and is designed to counter balance the weight of the connecting rods to reduce the pumping effort required from the user.
A unique pivot assembly (sealed ball bearings for the handle on a stainless steel axle) adds to the ease of operation and lower maintenance needs.
125 mm stroke length of the handle provides a water discharge of 1150 litres per hour with the cylinder installed in the range of the 15 m to 45 m below-ground level.
Provision of a Third Plate facilitates the easy removal of head assembly for routine maintenance without disturbing the original factory fitment of the pivot mechanism.
The Water Tank assembly has an appropriate coupler to suit 32 mm NB medium class Galvanized Iron (GI) riser pipes.
The Stand assembly is independent of the borewell, with legs directly grouted into the concrete platform. This ensures firm mechanical anchoring of the pump and a hygienic seal at the pump foundation.
A telescopic pump stand can be supplied to enable installation on borewells with 150 mm dia. casing pipe.
This hand pump can be supplied with different types of Stands, i.e., with standard three legs, or with a square or circular flange to suit the users' requirements.
Riser pipes comprise of locally available standard 32 mm NB GI pipes.
Connecting Rods are of cold drawn bright steel bar with threaded end couplers, electro-galvanised against corrosion. Stainless steel rods are also available.
The Cylinder is made from a cast iron casing with a polished brass liner and gun metal plunger and check valve components. Seals (pump buckets, valve seals and cap seals) are available in environmentally safe Nitrile rubber.
Cylinder is adaptable for use with Universal Cylinder components.
Strict quality control is maintained during manufacture of all components, conforming to the Bureau of Indian Standards' specification IS 9301.
Special tools and Standard tools for installation, Masonry tools and Shuttering for Platform construction are available. Also, Fishing tools, Village level maintenance tools and Spare parts kits for two or five years' normal operation can be supplied.
This pump can be easily adapted for shallow well, windmills and motorised operations with minor modifications.
